Appchallengelogo

U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) is holding an app development contest for high school students in her district.

The Congressional App Challenge is intended to encourage technological experimentation and education among young Americans, and underscore the value of so-called STEM education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Contest participants are asked to create a one- to- four-minute video demonstrating their app, displaying what the app does, what tools were used to create it and how it works.

Submissions will be judged on the quality of the idea, implementation of the idea, and how well the programmer or programming team demonstrated their exceptional skill level. Kelly will personally honor each winner. The winning app will also be displayed on the contest's website and in the Capitol Building for the year following the conclusion of the challenge.

To be eligible, participants must be enrolled in a 2nd district school and be at least 13 years old. Kelly's Illinois 2nd congressional district covers southern Cook county and the southeast edge of Chicago as well as Kankakee and Will counties.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 15. More information on the competition can be found by finding the Congressional App Challenge on the challenge.gov website.
