Momence approves $415,000 tax levy, discusses towing policy

Momencesign

The Momence City Council approved a $415,266 tax levy at its Dec. 7 meeting.

The levy will primarily cover the city's general fund, police, insurance and workers' compensation payments. A copy of the levy was posted for public viewing and feedback was collected per the Truth in Taxation laws this month.

The council also unanimously passed a resolution authorizing the city to use Motor Fuel Tax revenues to pay the city's bond debt.

John Metz Jr. of Metz Towing raised concerns with the council about the city's new police towing policy. The policy requires two companies to tow vehicles directly to the police station for storage, rather than keep them on their own lots.

Metz said he's spoken with neighboring communities and no other villages or cities seem to have similar programs. He cited a loss of $210 in business in one week because of the loss in storage fees. Mayor Mick Porter said the city would look into it and said it was not the city's intention to hurt local business.

Alderwoman Carolyn Navratil was absent.
