Community Services Committee prepares for e-voting

The Kankakee County Community Services Committee discussed its transition to electronic polling equipment at their regular meeting Nov. 24.

Chief Deputy Clerk Dan Hendrickson said the county has received six electronic polling books and is ready to begin using them to conduct surveys of polling locations. The county planned to test the equipment by using it in election judge training this month. Hendrickson said the rest of the equipment will arrive in January.

E-polling is expected to make it easier for election judges and other officials to keep better track of voter registration and other information in addition to providing real-time voting metrics on election days.

County staffer Lori Gadbois told the committee she has an opening in her office. The position requires a high school diploma and three years of customer service experience. Committee members expressed concern that the $12.50/hr wage was too low to feasibly retain quality staff, but Gadbois said it was the best the county could do.

The committee also discussed consolidating voting precincts in order to cut costs but did not take any action.

Board member Michael Bossert updated the committee on the county's GIS mapping program, following the departure of coordinator Roger Diercks. So far, the county has managed to avoid filling the GIS coordinator position by assigning mapping and other GIS activities to Planning Department official Del Skimmerhorn.

Committee members Carol Webber, Sally Evans, Jason Johnson and James Skutt were absent.
