County to hold public forum for strategic preservation plan

Kankakeecountybuilding

The Kankakee County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a series of public meetings around the county over the next few months to develop ideas for a countywide preservation plan.

The commissioners are interested in learning what buildings or sites have cultural and historical significance in each community as well as what stories, photos or other records people have for those sites.

County officials said the meetings will be the basis for an official list of historic structures, which will guide the priorities of the commission and inform the commission's new Kankakee County Preservation Plan. The plan will include goals, policies and plans for preserving the buildings and sites identified during the meetings.

The meetings will be held Jan. 26 at the Earl D. Schoeffner Memorial Building at 105 E. 2nd St. in Momence, Feb. 2 at the Leo T. Hassett Community Center at 211 N. Main St. in Manteno, Feb. 23 at the Aroma Park Village Hall Conference Room on Lowe Road in Aroma Park, March 22 at Herscher Village Hall at 272 E. 2nd St.in Herscher, April 19 at the Bourbonnais Public Library and May 10 at the Kankakee Public Library.

All meetings -- except the meeting in Kankakee -- begin at 7 p.m.; the Kankakee meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Door prizes and refreshments will be offered.
