The Kankakee County Community Services Committee met Dec. 22 to discuss amendments to last year's resolutions that consolidated several voting precincts.
Last year, the county consolidated six voting districts in Kankakee, Momence and Pembroke into three in advance of this year's election cycle.
Amendments to those resolutions were brought before the committee by the State's Attorney who suggested that the intention of the resolutions to consolidate not just precincts but also polling places was not clearly stated in the resolutions.
Several county board members were concerned that consolidating voting in Pembroke into one location would have a confusing and disorganized effect on the voting operation. The committee discussed the options but could not come to a consensus.
The committee voted to approve the amendments for the consolidated Kankakee and Momence precincts but transferred judgement on the number of polling places in Pembroke to the county board. In the meantime, the committee agreed to remove language from the Pembroke resolution that would have applied to all future elections, leaving it open for future adjustments.
The committee also discussed the Kankakee County Animal Control Center's effort to build a new shelter. Director Julie Boudreau told the committee the land had been purchased and cleared but that more money would be needed to get the facility's initial phase completed within the next two years.
