Parkhurst's summer reading program adds ice cream incentive

Library kids(1000)

Elementary school students in Illinois' 79th House District have been invited to take part in Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst’s (R-Kankakee) "Summer Reading Club," which challenges them to read eight books over the summer.

This year, Parkhurst’s club is themed “Going Places with Reading” and encourages students to enjoy the adventures offered through books. Students in first through fifth grade are encouraged to take part, and those who complete their eight books before August 11 will be invited to an ice cream party and receive a certificate of participation from the Illinois House.

Parents or guardians must sign off on the club brochure as children finish each book. The brochures were passed out in elementary schools throughout the district and are also available at Parkhurst’s office and online. Completed brochures are due in Parkhurst’s office in Kankakee by August 11.

District 79 public libraries where students can borrow their books include Fossil Ridge, Coal City, Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Limestone, Momence, Reddick, Pembroke and Peotone.
