Vaccine

Parents seeking school physicals and immunizations for their children can take advantage of a walk-in clinic at the Kankakee County Health Department, 2930 W. Station St., Kankakee, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10, according to a recent Facebook post from the Kankakee City clerk’s office.

Students who visit the walk-in clinic will be to complete their required physicals, receive immunizations and undergo lead and hemoglobin testing. They must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian if under the age of 18, and parents and guardians should bring current immunization records to the clinic.

Families that cannot make it to the walk-in clinic can also receive immunizations through the Health Department on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, but they must make an appointment first.

The Health Department accepts Medicaid and many private insurance policies, but also offers immunizations at a low rate for those who do not have insurance or an insurance policy that covers the costs of immunizations.

The Health Department also included a notice of new developments in vaccine requirements for the upcoming school year. Students in kindergarten through third grade and sixth grade through 12th grade must have two doses of varicella (chikenpox). Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade must have received one dose of meningococcal ACWY after their 11th birthday, while students in grade 12 must have two doses unless they received their first dose after the age of 16, in which case that is adequate. Children entering kindergarten must have four doses of polio. They should have received their last dose after the age of 4r and six months after their third dose.
