Jay Alan Martin, 85, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Heritage Village in Kankakee. Born on September 29, 1939, in Kankakee to Homer Ogle and Nelda (Pombert) Martin, Jay married his beloved wife Marylin Baron, known affectionately as “Peachie,” on June 20, 1959, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kankakee.

Jay, a proud Locomotive Engineer, worked 43 years with various railroad companies and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. His dedication to his work and colleagues earned him the nickname “Bird.” Jay was actively involved with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Division 354, serving as Secretary/Treasurer.

An engaged member of his community, Jay volunteered at Market Day, Las Vegas Night in Bradley, and St. Joseph Catholic School. He was a caring family man who enjoyed vacations, sharing stories, woodworking, camping, snowmobiling, supporting the Chicago Cubs, and attending his grandchildren’s events.

A devoted parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jay is survived by his wife Marylin; daughters Michelle Wedig (Jon-Arne Simonsen) and DesNeiges (Jeff) Richmond; grandchildren Madison, Bailey, Drew, and Carter.

Predeceased by his parents, siblings, and grandson Ethan Richmond, cremation rites were accorded. A memorial visitation and service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais, officiated by Deacon Patrick Skelly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Uplifted Care and Catholic Charities. The family expresses gratitude to Uplifted Care for their exceptional care and support during Jay’s final days.
