Robin Kelly, U.S. Congresswoman representing Illinois’ 2nd district since 2013, has recently used her social media platform to address issues of justice reform and gun safety.
On July 18, 2025, Kelly posted about the ongoing pursuit of justice for Breonna Taylor’s family, stating, “My heart goes out to Breonna Taylor’s family and all those still fighting for justice. Her life mattered, and the recent sentencing recommendation for an officer involved in her death is a difficult reminder of the work ahead. We must continue to push for a justice system that”.
Later that day, she addressed gun safety measures by drawing a parallel between firearm security and vehicle safety: “Reminding gun owners to secure their guns is no different than reminding drivers to buckle up — it’s commonsense. I introduced the Gun Safety Incentive Act with @RepAndreCarson & @RepLucyMcBath that includes a 10% tax credit for certified gun safes.”
On July 19, 2025, Kelly referenced the fatal shooting of postal worker Octavia Redmond as an example of why federal action on firearms is needed: “A year ago, Octavia Redmond, a dedicated postal worker like my own mother, was shot and killed on her route. Her death underscores the urgent, heartbreaking reality: we need federal gun reform. We can start by passing my Federal Firearm Licensee Bill.”
Kelly’s advocacy aligns with her long-standing role in Congress since succeeding Jesse Jackson Jr., as well as her previous service in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. Born in New York City in 1956 and currently residing in Matteson, Kelly holds a BA from Bradley University (1977).
