Robin Kelly, a U.S. Congress member representing Illinois’ 2nd district since 2013, recently addressed her stance on Medicaid cuts proposed by House Republicans through a series of tweets. With a background in the Illinois House of Representatives and an educational history from Bradley University, Kelly has consistently been involved in legislative matters concerning healthcare.

On May 13, 2025, Robin Kelly announced via Twitter that she would be opposing efforts by House Republicans to reduce Medicaid funding by $880 billion. In her tweet posted at 16:24 UTC, she stated: “Later this afternoon, I’m going into battle against House Republicans who are trying to slash Medicaid by $880 billion. I sit on the @EnergyCommerce Committee. Republicans will have to go through me to get their Medicaid cuts passed.”

In another tweet later that day at 19:54 UTC, Kelly emphasized the significance of Medicaid for her constituents and beyond: “Medicaid has been lifechanging for people in the Second District, Illinois, and across the country. It is a lifeline. The American people deserve affordable healthcare.”

Subsequently, at 20:54 UTC, she challenged the Republican narrative regarding the proposed budget cuts as measures against wastefulness. She asserted: “Republicans claim cutting Medicaid by $880 billion is about reducing waste. They’re lying. 13.7 million Americans would lose healthcare. Let’s call it what it is: Abandonment. Disinvestment. And disregard for human life.”

Kelly’s tenure in Congress began after succeeding Jesse Jackson Jr., bringing years of political experience and advocacy for healthcare accessibility.
