U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) said a hiring event she hosted Friday at South Suburban College in South Holland attracted 500 job seekers.
Kelly said 70 employers with active job openings were on hand to accept resumes and interview potential employees.
Companies and agencies participating at this year's event included ComEd, Metra, Comcast, Illinois Tollway, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, James McHugh Construction, U.S. Postal Service, Illinois State Police and the Chicago Transit Authority.
This was the third annual job fair organized by Kelly. She said two job seekers who attended the first job fair in 2013 participated this year as employee representatives from Kemper Home Services.
“It was gratifying and inspiring to learn that Sommatra Jackson and Ramona Young found jobs with Kemper at our first hiring event and returned this year to do the hiring,” Kelly said. “They are the reason why I host this event every year. I know there are so many hard-working, highly-qualified people in my district who just need to be connected to businesses looking for quality employees. Many employers told me today that they have hired job seekers from my past job fairs.
“A number of job seekers commented to me that they were very pleased with the wide variety of trades, services and professions represented at the event. We had employers from construction, government, health care and social services, retail, technology, as well as transportation and logistics,” Kelly said.
