Manteno to draft rules for Rubbermaid sheds

Manteno

The Manteno Planning and Zoning board held its regular meeting Oct. 15 at 7 a.m.

As more residents put up more and larger Rubbermaid sheds, the village has decided to draft a code specifically for the plastic structures. Until now, there haven't been any rules for Rubbermaid sheds because they have usually been small storage compartments that are similar to lockers.

As they've grown, though, officials believe they should be permitted just as with any other structure; consequently, Director of Building and Zoning Chris LaRocque was tasked with developing the language for the new code.

The village also agreed to loosen other codes: As long as a resident is replacing an entry or overhead garage door, permits will no longer be required. And after further review, the board has also agreed to review its new regulation requiring new subdivisions to be built with LED street lamps.

Since proposing the rule, the board found that the stipulation will double the lighting installation costs for developers. The board agreed to reconsider the rule at a separate meeting.

The board reiterated that Sabir Remodeling has been banned from working in Manteno indefinitely, after the company was accused of working without a permit.

Planning officials said the village has issued 24 more permits overall than the same time last year.
