Executive Committee faces health dept. cuts

Budget

The Kankakee County Executive Committee held its regular meeting Oct. 29.

Health Department lead Bonnie Schaafsma said she is still waiting for $1.7 million in state grant funds to be dispersed. The funding represents approximately 65 percent of the department's budget. Schaafsma said the department has enough money to continue current operations for six months. The state has warned that they may not disburse funds until as late as July, forcing the department and the county to adjust its funding plans sooner rather than later.

Mike Roof from the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) made a pitch for moving the VAC's office to the old jail to better accommodate the VAC with more space. The proposal was referred to the Buildings and Grounds Committee.

The committee also announced several appointments, including Duane Ferris to the McGillivary Special Drainage District, Lisa Ann Koehler to the Reddick Fire Protection District, Dana Forneris to the Reddick Fire Protection District, David Zack to the Kankakee River Conservancy District and Kathe Brunnick to the Kankakee River Conservancy District.

The committee also announced several job openings, including four openings on the Bloom Grove Cemetery Association, one opening at the Will-Kankakee Regional Development Association and another working with 911.
