Porter announces receipt of state funding for Momence

Gaspumps

Momence, Ill., received its past due Motor Fuel Tax, Use Tax and Video Gaming revenues from the state this week.

The taxes are typically collected through the state and disbursed to local municipalities to cover millions of dollars in basic operating costs, such as road repairs, but have been on hold during the state's budget impasse.

Without an approved budget, the state is legally not allowed to disburse funds, but last week, lawmakers were able to find a legislative pathway that allowed the state to distribute at least a portion of the backlog of local funding.

Mayor Mick Porter reminded residents that while some sources of funding have been in limbo, several other sources of revenue have remained unaffected, including the state's income tax and sales tax funds, which, along with property taxes, are the main sources of Momence's income.

With the holiday season at its peak, Mayor Porter also reminded residents of several opportunities to give. Residents can contribute a new toy to the Toys for Tots donation box at City Hall any time between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or volunteer at the 21st Annual Christmas Day Inc. Dinner at the Momence First Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Interested volunteers should contact Bob Bleyle at 815-472-4987.
