The Manteno Finance Committee held its regular meeting Oct 8.
Village officials said Manteno has received $255,000 in federal seizure money, which is taken by police during raids or investigations. The village will use the money to buy portable radios. It's also interested in using the money to buy a new fingerprint machine, car radios, updated tasers and a device that can download cell phone information.
The village will also commit $4,602 per year for the next two years to support the Kankakee County Economic Alliance (EA). The alliance is working to build a coalition of pro-business resources, including a designated Enterprise Zone that creates a business hub through the use of tax breaks and other incentives. The EA is asking neighboring communities to pay dues as well.
Dale Gerretse gave a preview of this year's village audit, saying revenues are about the same as last year while more tax rebates have pushed expenses up slightly. The full audit was presented at an Oct. 19 meeting.
The committee agreed to proceed with a web hosting and cyber security agreement with Webfoot Designs. The agreement will cut the village's web service costs by one third, from $120 per year to $80 per year.
The committee also announced that the energy company Invenergy is considering a natural gas electric plant in town. The plant would be open in four years at the earliest and would cost up to $1 billion.
