Manteno considers selling cell tower lease

Celltower

The Manteno Finance Committee discussed selling the lease on a cell tower Jan. 11 that could net the village $350,000.

Village Administrator Bernie Thompson said Landmark Dividend has offered the amount in exchange for a 99-year lease. The village currently carries the ground lease for the tower and would need to get approval from the tower's owner before moving any further. The item was expected to be discussed at Tuesday's board meeting.

Jim Hanley presented the committee with updates on the village's zamboni shopping process. Hanley said the village has an opportunity to by a used, refurbished zamboni from Minnesota for $24,000, but committee members could not decide whether it would be better to buy or lease the machine.

The committee also discussed potential projects for the year ahead, which included swale maintenance, replacing street signs and putting up flags on all 215 of the village's poles during school sporting events.

The committee reported that the American Legion will donate $3,644 to the police department for new exercise equipment.

The committee also considered the costs of signing up the police department for Lexipol, a policy and procedures training company that would help officers become current on the new laws implemented this year that affect policing.

The program would cost the department approximately $7,500. No decision or recommendation was made.
