Kankakee approves Cornerstone housing project

Kankakeecitylogo

The Kankakee City Council recently approved a special use permit for Cornerstone Services Inc. to build and operate a group housing facility at 1401 Navajo Court.

The council previously denied the company's application on Jan. 19.

At the request of the Kankakee Police Department, the council also voted to reduce the number of police sergeants to 12. The village previously passed an ordinance reducing the number of lieutenants to four.

Village officials said that no officers will be fired to meet the new quotas but that new officers would not be hired as current officers left or retired.

In light of the recent water crisis in Flint, Mich., Aqua representative Melissa Kahoun responded to an outpour of public interest in Kankakee city's water quality.

Kahoun assured residents that the city's water was clean and safe, citing quality tests conducted every two hours, every day of the year, along with other tests that are conducted.
