Superintendent’s Report

Dr. Walters called upon the principal’s to share the following good news:

School Event Explanation

Recognition

In April of 2016, the Bright Beginning’s program at Mark Twain had an extensive program review through ExceleRate. ExceleRate Illinois is a statewide quality recognition and improvement system designed to make continuous quality improvement an everyday priority among early learning providers.

The Bright Beginning’s program received a gold circle of quality rating which is the highest level rating possible. The Gold Circle of Quality recognizes programs that meet or go beyond the highest quality goals. Gold Circle programs have met the highest quality standards in three areas: learning environment and teaching quality; administrative standards; and training and education.

Donation

• Fed Ex and Sara Brown donated 12 book bags filled with school supplies for Mark Twain students. The students were very happy to get their new book bags and appreciated the generosity.

Donation

• The junior high school received gently used uniform shirts, pants, and shorts from Jeff and Krystal Cox. KJHS appreciates their generous donation.

Honor

• The Illinois State Board of Education recently notified Kankakee School District that Mr. David Knudson, art teacher at KHS, will receive recognition in the 2016-17 Those Who Excel education awards program. A banquet will be held on October 22nd in Bloomington for a night of celebrating outstanding educators! Congratulations to Mr. Knudson!

Principal’s Report

• Ms. O’Leary, principal at Edison Primary School, reported that Edison’s School Improvement Plan is aligned with the School District’s Strategic Plan. Edison’s goals are 1) develop common assessments, 2) culture and climate, and 3) communication. To support their common assessments teachers created an assessment timeline, created a timeline for curriculum, and developed a benchmarking system. Currently, Edison is in the process of reviewing student data.

Ms. O’Leary also reported that the culture of the building is being driven from class meetings held in the mornings. The Student Government students have the opportunity to go to their class and discuss such things as lining up outside, recess, early release activities, etc.

Ms. O’Leary stated that Edison is using Class DoJo, a new system that allows the parents to have access to see if their student is getting positive or negative points. Currently, Edison has 54% of their families on board for Class DoJo and they are continuing to work hard to get all their parents signed up.

Edison also feels that the new Student Government is a plus in reaching their communication goal. The students have a voice in the school system about decision making. Also, 82% of the classroom teachers attended the Student Engagement Conference this summer. This shows the dedication that these teachers want to move forward.

Edison is very excited to have the Technology Magnet Program. Ms. O’Leary reported they now have a 3D printer and a drone. She stated that Edison is simply not using the technology to substitute for paper or pencil, but modifying the way they teach. Third graders will be building drones in the springtime and flying them. Ms. O’Leary concluded her presentation with the drone that flew around the room taking everyone’s pictures.
