Momence has completed one of the last hurdles that will allow the Norfolk Southern Railroad to terminate at the city’s North Maple crossing, the city announced recently.
Mayor Mick Porter said the city has signed and delivered documents related to the construction of an access road to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The road will cost approximately $327,000, to be funded through an Illinois Commerce Commission Grade Crossing Protection Grant.
Porter said the city hopes to begin construction on the road in May.
City engineers, the Norfolk Southern Railroad, IDOT and the Illinois Commerce Commission have been working for three years to see the project come to fruition, Porter said.
In other Momence news, Porter noted the success of the annual Easter egg hunt and highlighted the Glad Festival Association Cash Bash, a recent fundraising event. He also highlighted the 16th Annual Momence Community Auction, which will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the St. Pat’s Academy Gymnasium.
