Rep. Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City) posted a video on his website recently in which he discusses the special session on public school funding that Gov. Bruce Rauner called to resolve the stalemate.
At issue is a provision in Senate Bill 1 to provide Chicago Public Schools (CPS) with $250 million to pay for its pension debt, resulting in less funding for the other school districts in the state
“Sadly, the Illinois House met for a mere 26 minutes on Monday, and at no time did we truly discuss public education.” Bennett says in the video.
Rauner vetoed SB1 on Aug. 1 and asked the Senate to send him a new school funding bill.
Bennett says in the video that Senate will take up the governor’s veto.
“The Senate has up to 15 days to act on the governor’s veto,” Bennett says.
Bennet added that bipartisan leaders are continuing to meet to find a compromise that is equitable to all students no matter where they attend school.
“I’ m hopeful these meetings will produce results that can be taken up this week in the Senate and ultimately all schools will open on time,” Bennett said.
