District

Districts of Distinction is a national annual recognition program created by District Administration magazine to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that work. They are looking to recognize established initiatives that are yielding quantifiable benefits, and that could be replicated by other districts.

Like in many small towns, Kankakee businesses couldn’t find the workers to fill local jobs, and the high-performing students in the school district had to seek careers away from home—and sometimes in another state.

In Kankakee County, local business and industry leaders had over 3,000 jobs available without the proper workforce to fill them due to low Districts of graduation rates at Kankakee School District 111. Distinction Award

Business and industry leaders wanted the district to emphasize soft skills, such as arriving to work on time, getting along with colleagues and following directions, all of which are required for future employment.

In 2015-16, the district made its K6 classrooms include college and career readiness lessons. During grade 6, students take a survey to find out what courses they’re most interested in. Based on the results, they then research and study that course.

Each year, the district creates projects that teach students how certain subjects, such as math and reading, are used in every career.

The district also hosts a freshman academy that offers support to students from grades 9 through 12.
