Darn right! Kankakee Community College soars past sock drive goal

Kcc student veterans

Liz East and her students had the recent Kankakee Community College (KCC) sock drive covered.

Although the KCC Veterans Association set a goal to collect 100 pairs of socks for its American Red Cross of the Illinois River Valley’s “Sock It to our Vets” drive, East and her KCC Adult Education English as a Second Language classes helped more than triple the target.

The association reported it had collected 379 pairs of socks for its community service initiative, according to a press release. The group is for students and staff who are military veterans, members of the military community, and military supporters, according to the KCC website.

“Our Purpose is to provide a community atmosphere, camaraderie, a gateway to leadership development, and ccessibility to benefits,” a Facebook group of 69 members posted. “We continue our service by facilitating outreach in our local communities, with those who have served, and their families.”

Much of the association, an approved chapter of Student Veterans of America, is about dedicating time to reach out to the local community in order to service those who have served, and their families. The Student Veterans Association is a national organization with more than 1,300 affiliated chapters, partners, programs and services for veterans throughout the country, according to the organization’s website.

One of the services this year includes the 2017 Google – SVA Scholarship, which awards eight student veterans with $10,000 each.
