Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Kankakee County, Illinois was called to order by President Rob Rodewald on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 7:03 PM at the Administrative Offices, 281 W John Casey Road, Bourbonnais, IL. 1.02 Pledge of Allegiance.

1.03 The following members answered roll call: John Hall, Jamie Freedlund, Rich McBarnes, Nicole McCarty, Jayne Raef, Rob Rodewald.

The following members were absent and did not participate in the meeting in any manner or to any extent whatsoever: Michael Jurka

2. Recognition of Staff, Students and Community

2.01 Recognition of Retiring Staff – On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, the following staff members were presented with a retirement gift and recognized for their years of service.

2.02 - Recognition of Student - State Track - Removed from Agenda

2.03 Recognition of Student – Casey Wassmund, Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Shannon Swilley, Associate Principal, recognized Casey Wassmund, a Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center eighth grade student who organized a two-week-long clothing drive to support Harbor House, a Kankakee County Coalition Against Domestic Violence organization. In all, about 80 bags of clothing donated due to his efforts. We appreciate his thoughtfulness and hard work on this project.

2.04 Recognition of Students – LeVasseur Math Teams

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Jenn Longtin, Principal recognized the LeVasseur 4th Grade Math Team members for their outstanding work in the ICTM 2017-18 Math Team Contest. They ultimately placed 6th in the state which is an impressive feat.

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Jenn Longtin, Principal recognized the LeVasseur 3rd Grade Math Team members for their outstanding work in the ICTM 2017-18 Math Team Contest. They wrapped up the season in 8th place overall. Congrats to all for earning a spot in the top ten!

2.05 Recognition of Community - Kelly McCully and the Bourbonnais Library

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53 Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction, recognized Kelly McCully, the Director of the Bourbonnais Public Library, for her continued support and involvement with the district. Kelly has worked with us on developing the Community Garden, tutoring for our EL families, The Dolly Parton Book Program and numerous family reading programs at our schools. We greatly appreciate this relationship and Kelly's willingness to participate. We look forward to more projects and connections meaningful connections between the two organizations.

3.02 Communications from/to Visitors – The Student Council from Upper Grade Center asked to address the Board. Stephanie Alvis and Barbara Soucy were also present as their advisors. The four students gave a summary of all of the Student Council’s service projects and activities throughout the school year as well as the Leadership Convention they attended in Springfield.

5. Mission of Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 is to: Collaborate with staff, students, families, and community

5.01 Seek Bids for HVAC Replacement at BUGC - Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services

Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services, presented the justification to seek bids for the replacement of 13 HVAC units at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center. Four of these units would be used to air condition the gym. The current units are approximately 25 years old and are inefficient and ongoing repairs are costly.

Motion by John Hall, second by Jamie Freedlund to approve to seek bids for HVAC replacement at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center as presented. The following voice votes were heard: Ayes: Jamie Freedlund, John Hall, Rich McBarnes, Nicole McCarty, Jayne Raef, Rob Rodewald. Nayes: None. Absent: Michael Jurka. Final Resolution: Motion carries.

5.02 Set Joint Meeting with Village of Bourbonnais, Superintendent Daniel R. Hollowell, Ed.D.

The Village Board proposed June 12th, at 6 p.m., for the joint meeting. All Board members present agreed to this date and time.

5.03 Set Open House Schedule - Superintendent Daniel R. Hollowell, Ed.D.

Superintendent Hollowell presented the proposed schedule for the 2018-2019 open houses and explained the reasonings for the changes. The proposed open houses are scheduled for

August 20, 2018 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Shabbona

August 20, 2018 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Liberty

August 21, 2018 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm LeVasseur

August 21, 2018 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Shepard

6. Mission of Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 is to: Provide a safe learning environment with innovation instructional practices

6.01 Set Date for Building Walkthroughs - Superintendent Daniel Hollowell, Ed.D.

No specific dates were proposed at this time. Dr. Hollowell asked for some feedback from the Board regarding when to have the building walkthroughs.

6.02 Staff Additions - Superintendent Daniel R. Hollowell, Ed.D.

Daniel R. Hollowell, Superintendent requested the Board approval on adding one additional first grade position due to the number of students in the current Kindergarten classrooms. Dr. Hollowell also requested Board approval on hiring a second teacher in the Emotional Disabilities classroom at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center to better meet the needs of the 13 ED students and support the rest of the staff with emotional needs of our regular education students as well.

Motion by Rich McBarnes, second by Nicole McCarty to approve the addition of one first grade teacher and one ED teacher at Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center as presented. The following voice votes were heard: Ayes: Jamie Freedlund, John Hall, Rich McBarnes, Nicole McCarty, Jayne Raef, Rob Rodewald. Nayes: None. Absent: Michael Jurka. Final Resolution: Motion carries.

7. Mission of Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 is to: Inspire all students to reach their unique potential as globally conscious learners

7.01 Washington DC Trip Presentation - Daniel Chamernik, Teacher; Shannon Swilley, Associate Principal, Lisa Carlton, Teacher

Daniel Chamernik, Teacher; Shannon Swilley, Associate Principal, Lisa Carlton, Teacher showed a short video of the recent Washington DC trip.

7.02 Dibels Report - Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction

Dr. Jim Duggan presented the Dibels Review Report. A beginning of year, middle of level representing students who are above target. Dr. Duggan also presented a district-wide two year review and and a district-wide five year review. Dr. Duggan then reviewed 2017-2018 progress by school and by grade.

7.03 Enrichment Activities Report - Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction

Dr. Duggan explained enrichment activities available to student in the District. Teachers were asked to propose programs they wanted to teach with the idea that they would be self funding. Dr. Duggan reviewed both the summer activities and school year activities, the teachers, and the number of students involved in each.
