Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53 Board of Education met Jan. 22.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Kankakee County, Illinois was called to order by Rob Rodewald on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 7:00 PM at the Administrative Offices, 281 W John Casey Road, Bourbonnais, IL.

1.02 Pledge of Allegiance.

1.03 The following members answered roll call: John Hall, Jamie Freedlund, Rich McBarnes, Michael Jurka, Nicole McCarty, Jayne Raef, Rob Rodewald.

The following members were absent and did not participate in the meeting in any manner or to any extent whatsoever: None.

District Administrators Present: Superintendent Daniel Hollowell, Ed,D.; Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction; Bernadette Henriott, Director of Student Support Services; Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services; Shannon Swilley, Associate Principal; Roger Hale, Technology Director.

2. Recognition of Staff, Students and Community

2.01 Recognition of Staff - Erin Emerson, Nurse

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Bernadette Henriott, Director of Student Support Services recognized Mrs. Erin Emerson for being officially accepted in to the school nurse program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has already started her coursework and should complete the program and obtain her degree by Dec. 31, 2019. With this certification she will have additional expertise to meet the needs of all of our students.

2.02 Recognition of Staff - District Social Workers

On behalf of Bourbonnais School District 53, Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction, recognized Michael Keigher, Connie Lambert, Julie Langer, Diana Estes and Caleigh McGowan our district social workers, for organizing the many donations our district received for our needy families for the Christmas holiday. They spent hours getting information from teachers, contacting families, purchasing items, working with organizations, delivering gifts or arranging for families to pick the items up. They are truly committed to helping our families and worked up to the last minute before break to be sure everyone in need received help.

2.03 Recognition of Staff - Sarah Matyskela

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Bernadette Henriott, Director of Student Support Services recognized Sarah Matyskela, LeVasseur Destiny Teacher, for obtaining a grant from the Kankakee County Autism Society. She was awarded $1000 to purchase sensory materials for her students. Many of her students seek these types of materials throughout the day. Although they are valuable to the learning process, they are also expensive. We appreciate her willingness to submit a proposal to this organization. Her students will greatly benefit from the new, fun, interactive kit!

2.04 Recognition of Students - There were no recognition of students.

2.05 Recognition of Community - Beef O'Brady's

On behalf of Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, Superintendent Daniel R. Hollowell recognized Beef O'Brady's. They have an area of the restaurant that LeVasseur has been able to reserve for free for several after school functions. Staff at the restaurant has been very accommodating and flexible in how the space is used. LeVasseur staff sincerely appreciates the partnership we have with them. We feel welcomed each time we are there!

3.05 Communications from/to Superintendent – FOIA Requests – There was one FOIA requests reported by Superintendent Hollowell from IRTA for names and emails of all retired teachers or administrators retiring in 2019. The FOIA request from IRTA was completed to in a timely manner.

5.01 Second Quarter Financial Report- Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services

Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services reported on the second quarter financials by line item comparing actual to annual budget and last year.

5.02 Winter Conferences - Superintendent Daniel Hollowell, Ed.D.

Superintendent Daniel Hollowell, Ed.D. explained the reason for changing the 2018-2019 school calendar. Due to changes at the State level, February 15, 2019 will be changed to a Schedule A day instead of a Schedule B to allow for parent teacher conferences all afternoon.

6. Mission of Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 is to: Provide a safe learning environment with innovation instructional practices

6.01 Approval Additional Teacher Assistant Position at Noel LeVasseur Elementary - Bernadette Henriott, Director of Student Support Services

Bernadette Henriott, Director of Student Support Services explained the need for an additional teacher assistant at Noel LeVasseur elementary. Discussion followed.

Motion by Jayne Raef, second by Jamie Freedlund to approve the 1.0 FTE additional teacher assistant at Noel LeVasseur as presented. The following voice votes were heard: Jamie Freedlund, John Hall, Michael Jurka, Rich McBarnes, Nicole McCarty, Jayne Raef, Rob Rodewald. Nays: None. Absent: None. Final Resolution: Motion Carries.

6.02 Parking Lot Update - Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services

Dennis Crawford, Director of Business Services reported on the damages to the Shepard parking lot due to a water main break. Mr. Crawford shared the timeline of reporting, insurance decisions and claim estimate of $180,000 to $200,000. Mr. Crawford and discussed next steps. Discussion followed.

6.03 Liberty Expansion Update - Superintendent Daniel Hollowell, Ed.D.

Dr. Hollowell reviewed three options for the Liberty expansions and discussed what has been accomplished and the next steps. Architects will meet with designated groups on February 26. Discussion followed.

7. Mission of Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 is to: Inspire all students to reach their unique potential as globally conscious learners

7.01 DIBELS Update- Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction

Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction reviewed the DIBELS mid year results by grade and indicator. Dr. Duggan explained how the information is used and the next steps.

7.02 Bilingual Program Update- Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction

Dr. Jim Duggan, Director of Instruction gave an update of the ESL/Bilingual Program. There is one new teacher hired for the 2019-2020 school year.
