Kankakee School District 111 Board of Education met Nov. 12.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Kankakee School District No. 111, Kankakee County, Illinois, was held at 6:01 p.m. in the Multi-purpose room at Proegler School, 710 North Chicago Ave, Kankakee, Illinois.

ROLL CALL

Members present: Jess Gathing, Jr. Vice President

Deb Johnston

Members absent: Mary Archie (*entered at 6:04 pm)

Chris Bohlen (*entered at 6:04 pm)

A quorum was declared present.

Closed Session

t 6:04 p.m., a motion was made by Bohlen, seconded by Johnston, to adjourn to closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity. ROLL CALL VOTE--Ayes: Wells, Archie, Shea, Johnston, Williams, Gathing, and Bohlen. Nays: none. Motion carried.

The closed session was adjourned at 6:58 p.m.

At 7:02 p.m. the regular session was reconvened.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Proegler students.

 Recognition

Kennedy has participated in the IESA Regional Speech Team competition for three years. Each year, students improve their speech skills and performance. On November 2nd, seven teams participated from Kennedy. Five of those teams earned 1st place and two earned 2nd place. Congratulations to Coach Justine Selock and the students who she coached. We encourage the junior high to get involved in speech to provide continued opportunities for these students.

The Yellow Elephant Gallery in downtown Kankakee, ownedby Elizabeth Dunbar, selected Kennedy’s art department toreceive various art supplies and a check for $135.00 that Mr. Costanza will use to purchase materials for art classes. We appreciate this partnership and generous donation.

Krystal Clifton was selected as a winner in the 2018-2019Life Education Center’s “Best Practice Contest.” The “Best Practice Contest” is designed to recognize innovativeeducators who develop projects to reinforce our curriculum with monetary prizes of $100.00 for 1st place, $50.00 for 2ndplace, and $25.00 for 3rd place. The Life Education Centerwas delighted with Krystal’s 2nd place entry titled “Week of Kindness.” Krystal’s lesson nicely complements theprevention education efforts focusing on healthy lifestyle choices and supporting social and emotional development.

Congratulations to Dr. Walters for being chosen to be on the School Construction Task Force for the State of Illinois.

Principal’s Report

Mrs. Jennifer Hering started by honoring Veterans with a video as well as certificates. Mrs. Hering discussed what the district’s vision means to Proegler, goals (such as) implementing MTSS systems of support to promote career readiness. So far Proegler has 23 students that receive intervention for social- emotional learning and 33 students receiving intervention for academics. Mrs. Hering discussed assessment data from the 2018-2019 school year. She stated 81% of students met or exceeded the expectations for preschoolers. Mrs. Hering reviewed the preschool programs throughout the county, family engagement activities for this school year, community outreach, little reader’s book club, donations they have received throughout the school year and policy council meetings. Mrs. Hering discussed the grant for early childhood and reported that the preschool program for all was recognized with gold status. Sherry Spencer introduced the Proegler staff.

Amendment of Agenda

Mrs. Wells asked for a motion to amend the agenda to remove G-1 (closed session minutes) from the agenda and to also move G-8 (Leave of Absences) to Action Item H-2.

A motion was made by Gathing, seconded by Shea to approve the amendment to the agenda as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE—Ayes: Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried.

1. Approval of 2019 Tentative Tax Levy.

A motion was made by Bohlen, seconded by Gathing, to approve the 2019 tentative tax levy as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE--Ayes: Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, Archie, Bohlen, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried.

2. Approval of Leave of Absence for Erica Grady

A motion was made by Bohlen, seconded by Johnston, to approve the leave of absence for Erica Grady as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE--Ayes: Johnston, Shea, Williams, Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried.

3. Approval to deny the Leave of Absences for Lamar Hamilton

A motion was made by Bohlen, seconded by Shea, to approve the denial of leave of absence of Lamar Hamilton as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE--Ayes: Shea, Williams, Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, Johnston and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried.
