Kankakee County Sheriff issued the following announcement on Aug. 18.
Sheriff Mike Downey, and the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, is warning the community in regards to scams being reported in our area. We have received multiple reports from area residents complaining about voicemails where the caller claims that there has been a breach where the victims’ Social Security Number was compromised and requires the victims to call into a specific phone number with threats of arrest for failing to do so.
We want area residents to be aware that this type of scam, and every type of scam for that matter, oftentimes targets the elderly or otherwise vulnerable.
We continue to encourage area residents who received unsolicited calls to remain skeptical and to never provide personal information or monetary information (credit card or gift card information). If the caller claims to be a representative of a government agency, you should always find the official number (not the number that the caller called from) and verify the validity of the call yourself.
If you feel you may have fell victim to a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
