Kankakee FD responds to 176 fires in 2018

Kankakee Fire District responded to 571 calls in 2018 - 5.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Kankakee included 176 fires - 88 structure fires, 26 vehicle fires and 62 other fires. The fire department also responded to 13 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $977,244 in fire loss - or about $5,553 per fire.

The department also received 382 false calls, including 31 malicious calls and 351 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries and two civilian fire-related deaths. Additionally, four fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Kankakee Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 49 active employees and 82 retired or inactive employees, was $2,230,806 in debt as of April 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $15,821 for every fire in 2017.
