Sen. Jason Barickman recently announced a new initiative to help those who are behind on their energy bills.
The last few years have been tough for everyone, but those who have fallen behind on their energy bills have a little more help. Ameren Illinois created a 12-month repayment plan for those who need it.
"Ameren Illinois has rolled out a 12-month repayment plan to help customers who have fallen behind on energy bills," Barickman said. "The repayment application is open from now until July 31."
The energy company highlights a variety of energy assistance programs on its website, including LIHEAP, Warm Neighbors Cool Friends (which has income restrictions) and the payment plans option.
The payment agreement option requires a 10% down payment, except for those who have qualified for LIHEAP, for those who apply before July 31. After July 31, customers with outstanding balances will be required to pay 25% of the amount they owe before they can establish a monthly payment plan.
Individuals who do start payment plans must still pay their regular monthly bills and their payment plan amount otherwise, default could occur, and they could face disconnection.
