In a June 10 Facebook post, Rep. Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) spoke out about gas prices.
"In addition to paying the highest effective tax rates in the nation, Illinois families are now facing yet another financial burden as gas prices continue to rise. It's time for Democrat lawmakers to step up and help us make the structural changes necessary to bring lasting relief to our residents" Haas posted.
Haas shared a link to an NPR article about gas prices. "The biggest weekly shock came in states such as Michigan, Illinois and Indiana — all of which saw gas rise by more than 40 cents in the past week."
According to AAA, average per-gallon gas prices on June 11 were $5.004 nationally, and $5.560 in Illinois.
In Illinois, gas prices surged past $5.00 per gallon on June 1, according to Illinois Policy. Regular gas and diesel in Illinois reached their highest recorded prices of $5.13 and $5.31 respectively on June 1. Record prices are taking their toll on businesses and consumers across the state. Every state is reeling with elevated gas prices, but Illinois' second-highest gas tax in the nation piles on to already soaring gas prices. Only six states have higher gas prices than Illinois.
