Rep. Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) is drawing attention to a longtime family-owned greenhouse.
"I am proud to recognize Benoit Greenhouses in Kankakee for my September Local Business Spotlight!" Haas posted on Facebook. “This local family-run business is extremely special to our community, and has been for the last 47 years. It’s spectacular in the fall season when there are fun activities fit for the whole family.”
Benoit Greenhouses has served the community since 1975, with greenhouses on Splear Road that were built in 1884 and have been producing plants ever since. The Benoit family has been involved with the business since 1975 when Vince and Christine Benoit purchased the business with Mark and Brenda Benoit. Between 1989 and 2019, Vince and Christine were the sole owners, when their son Luke and his wife bought in.
The Daily Journal wrote Benoit Greenhouses had a rough moment during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. While they had planned to do activities like a corn maze at its 21-acre property, it still sold pumpkins.
“I guess carving pumpkins never goes out of style,” Luke Benoit said to the Daily Journal.
The Benoit Greenhouses opened for the fall on Sept. 3, and are open for fall fun hours and activities, including games, a corn maze, and a petting zoo. The greenhouses are open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday through Oct. 30.
The Small Business of the Month honor is not a new commitment from Haas. In August, she highlighted New York City Deli as the Small Business of the Month.
Haas and Erin Slone (D) will face each other on the ballot for the upcoming Nov. 8 general election.
