State Representative Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) has recognized Sweet Darren's in the 79th District for the November Local Business Spotlight. Sweet Darren's, owned by Jolene Boothe and Justin Caldwell, is not just a bakery but an organization that aims to engage students with disabilities and teach them life skills before they graduate.

At Sweet Darren's, students with disabilities are provided with a fulfilling work program that enables them to participate in a meaningful way. Rep. Haas emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, "One part of my job as state representative is to protect our state's most vulnerable, and Sweet Darren's provides a phenomenal opportunity for students with disabilities in our area."

The inspiration behind Sweet Darren's is Darren Joseph Boothe, who was born in May 2009 and has multiple disabilities, including speech and language impairment. Despite his challenges, Darren is described by his school district as "one of the happiest kids on earth" and serves as a reminder that courage can make a significant impact. Through Sweet Darren's, families of individuals with disabilities can connect and see the world through their eyes.

In addition to their mission of inclusivity, Sweet Darren's also offers a delectable menu of treats. From bakery items like cinnamon rolls, monster cookies, and confetti cupcakes to indulgent options like turtle cheesecake, there is something for everyone. They even offer ice cream by the scoop or pint, as well as pies and crisps. Their delicious treats keep customers coming back for more.

Looking ahead, Sweet Darren's has ambitious goals. They aim to open a larger brick-and-mortar shop to serve more people, employ several special needs adults, and hire a support staff to make their dream a reality. Furthermore, they offer catering services for weddings, birthday parties, and large corporate events.

Sweet Darren's is always on the lookout for volunteers, and those interested can visit their website at sweetdarrens.com. In addition to treats, customers can also purchase merchandise that proudly displays the shop's slogan: "Changing lives one baked good and one scoop at a time."

Sweet Darren's exemplifies the power of community and inclusion. Through their dedication to providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities, they are changing lives and making a positive impact. Rep. Haas' recognition of Sweet Darren's in the November Local Business Spotlight is well-deserved, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting businesses that prioritize inclusivity and empowerment.
