Today, on December 26th, Kwanzaa commences, a vibrant and culturally significant celebration that spans several days and culminates on January 1st. This holiday holds great importance for those who partake in its festivities, and it is a time of reflection, unity, and gratitude. As we enter this joyous occasion, we extend our warmest wishes to all who observe Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa was first established in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of African Studies, as a way to honor African heritage and culture. It is rooted in the principles of Nguzo Saba, which means "the seven principles" in Swahili. These principles - Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith) - serve as the foundation of Kwanzaa.

During the week-long celebration, families and communities come together to commemorate these principles through various rituals and activities. The lighting of the Kinara, a candle holder with seven candles representing the principles of Kwanzaa, takes center stage. Each day, a new candle is lit, symbolizing the progression through the principles and the growth of unity and collective responsibility.

As Kwanzaa unfolds, it is important to recognize the significance of this holiday and its impact on the African diaspora. It serves as a time for individuals to reflect on their African heritage, embrace their cultural roots, and reaffirm their commitment to community building.

In the spirit of Kwanzaa, let us remember the importance of unity and self-determination. As Dr. Maulana Karenga once said, "Kwanzaa is a celebration of the family, the community, and the culture," emphasizing the essence of this festive occasion.

As we embark on this Kwanzaa celebration, we wish all those who observe a joyous and meaningful holiday. Let us come together, embrace the principles of Kwanzaa, and foster a sense of unity and purpose in our lives and communities. Happy Kwanzaa to all who celebrate!
