State Representative Jackie Haas from Kankakee has announced progress on House Bill 79, aimed at securing the retirement benefits of school security guards who are members of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).

The bill proposes that retired law enforcement officers can return to work as school security guards without risking their retirement benefits. It increases the allowable working hours annually from 599 to 999.

Rep. Haas emphasized the importance of this measure, stating: "Our schools rely on experienced security personnel to help keep students and staff safe. This bill ensures that retired law enforcement officers can now return to work as school security guards without jeopardizing their hard-earned retirement benefits, working up to 999 hours annually (up from 599). It’s a common-sense measure that supports public safety while protecting the financial security of those who dedicate their careers to keeping us safe."
