Yesterday, State Representative Jackie Haas successfully passed a bill that designates March as French Heritage Month in Illinois. The proposal received unanimous support on the House floor.
Haas expressed her motivations behind House Bill 2361, stating, “House Bill 2361 designates the month of March of each year as French Heritage Month to promote the study of the French language and the culture of French-speaking people,” adding that “This bill is a fantastic local initiative that was brought to me due to my own French heritage and efforts to bring more recognition of French culture to Illinois.”
The Representative collaborated with various stakeholders to draft the bill, including local organizations and international leaders.
Haas acknowledged, “I want to give a special thank you to everyone who collaborated on this legislation, including Lisa Kahn the Chicago-Midwest Chapter Chair of the French Heritage Society, Jim Paul the President of the Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society, and two French Consulates from Quebec: Clément Calais and Yannick Tagand.”
The bill will advance to the Senate for further consideration.
