Robin Kelly, a U.S. Congress member representing Illinois' 2nd district since 2013, has recently expressed her concerns on social media regarding gun violence and immigration enforcement actions. Kelly, who succeeded Jesse Jackson Jr., has been an advocate for building safer communities and addressing public health issues related to gun violence.
On June 4, 2025, Kelly called for substantial legislative measures from Congress to combat gun violence. She emphasized that "moments of silence have never been enough" and reaffirmed her commitment to creating safer communities during #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth.
In a post dated June 5, 2025, Kelly highlighted an incident involving Chicago residents who were detained by ICE during what was supposed to be a routine immigration check-in. She described the detentions as unlawful and noted that community members attempted to protect their neighbors amidst the chaos. Kelly criticized the actions of the Trump administration, stating that "they were following the law — but the Trump administration does not."
On June 6, 2025, Kelly participated in #WearOrange Day to honor Hadiya Pendleton and the approximately 46,000 lives lost annually due to gun violence in the United States. She voiced her solidarity with those affected by this public health crisis and survivors of gun violence while aligning herself with the @HouseDemocrats in their fight to end such violence.
Kelly's background includes serving in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 before her tenure in Congress. Born in New York City in 1956 and currently residing in Matteson, she is a graduate of Bradley University.
