Last summer, the Board of Kankakee County passed a resolution adopting both affirmative action and anti-discrimination policies for county workers and contractors.

Signed by Chairman Michael Bossert and County Clerk Bruce Clark on Aug. 9, the measure bans discrimination for a number of protected classes. It mirrors language used in federal Title IX laws.

The wording specifically prohibits discrimination on the basis of “race, creed, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status or physical or mental handicap,” among other categories, according to a county government release.

Also made clear in the resolution is its application not only to employees, but also to contractors who provide materials or services.

In approving the regulation, the Board is also adopting “affirmative action (policies) to assure equality of employment opportunity,” according to the announcement.
