The Kankakee City Council held its regular meeting Nov. 16.
Taking advantage of the new River Station Senior Apartments development, the council voted to rearrange its configuration of handicapped parking, adding two new sections and culling handicapped designations from eight addresses, mostly along South Sixth Ave. Mayor Epstein introduced the motion by describing the existing situation as "an extraordinary amount of handicapped parking."
During public comments, Donta Gee introduced her organization, Beautiful I Am, to the council. Gee said the new organization is working to partner local youth with local entrepreneurs working in fields the youth may be interested in pursuing as a career. Gee said she was at the meeting to make the council aware of the project and open up a line of communication. Mayor Epstein thanked Gee for sharing and looked forward to hearing more from the youth in the program.
Aldermen Osenga reported that the Kankakee Police's traffic unit issued 125 citations in October, including 50 during Halloween. Osenga also said that as part of Fire Prevention Month, the fire department installed 1,000 new smoke alarms, bringing the total of known alarms to 6,000 across the city.
Council member Curtis was absent from the meeting.
