The Kankakee County Board approved a request Dec. 8 for $2,865,219 in Motor Fuel Tax revenues to fund highway projects in 2016.
The board approved the request during its meeting and filed it with the Illinois Department of Transportation, as per procedure.
The request comes after the state announced it had passed emergency legislation to release Motor Fuel Tax and other revenues to local governments after withholding the funds due to the budget stalemate.
The state is not allowed to disburse funds without an approved budget, but in finding a legislative path around that rule, lawmakers were able to disburse millions of much-needed infrastructure funds to villages and cities around the state.
