The City of Kankakee Planning Board held its regular meeting Nov. 17 in the City Council chambers.
The board approved a change of zoning request for Donna Mitchell, who's looking to open a daycare business at 703 South Lincoln Ave. Mitchell is looking to build a home at the address, which is currently two separate lots and zoned for neighborhood commercial use.
Planning officials walked Mitchell through a number of procedural hurdles that would be required to proceed with her business plans, which begins with rezoning and other adjustments, at the location. The board eventually agreed to approve the change in zoning to help get the process started. Mitchell is already a licensed childcare provider and recently finished formal education in childcare administration.
The business, which Mitchell hopes to see open within approximately a year, would be called "Make a Difference Childcare." She said it would accommodate 8 to 12 children daily and make use of local facilities, such as public parks.
The board also advanced the application of Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, which wants to move their crematorium to 1898 West Court St. The company is expanding its crematorium services as demand continues to grow. Owner Tim Gernon said by 2030, 70 percent of deceased people will be cremated, up from 40 percent currently.
The board tabled a proposal from a developer working on behalf of Dollar General until they receive further details on how the site will meet village code for parking, drainage and landscaping.
