Kankakee Community College (KCC) is challenging job seekers to put in extra effort at its Healthcare Employment Fair on Aug. 17.
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make an 'all out' effort to meet with every employer that has the potential to hire you," the college suggested in a release. "In order to make that happen you will need to be prepared. Preparation is the key to making a successful presentation at any job or career fair."
The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon in the KCC College Center, includes a number of tips for prospective employees, including things they should work on ahead of the fair.
Companies that have registered to take part in the fair include Citadel Healthcare, Elite Care Management, Good Shepherd Manor, Help at Home, Indian Oaks Academy, Oasis Medical Services, OSF Healthcare System, Presence Health and Riverside Healthcare. KCC encourages job seekers to do research on each of the companies and determine which ones they feel would be the best fit.
KCC said candidates should spend some time thinking about their strengths, skills and career goals, and even come up with a 60-second pitch about themselves that encompasses their background, education and aspirations. This will make it easier for them to present themselves quickly and succinctly to the companies they would like to work with, the college said in the release.
The college stressed the need for a strong first impression, encouraging job seekers to forgo jeans and backpacks for job interviews. Further, those in attendance should silence their phones to ensure there are no embarrassing interruptions when they are speaking with companies.
At the fair, candidates should make sure to collect business cards from each representative so that they create a point of contact for further enquiries, KCC said in the release.
