Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) was selected to join 39 other leaders at the recent Edgar Fellows Program at the University of Illinois.

A news release on Parkhurst's website said the program, which brings together rising leaders from throughout the state, was to run through Aug. 10 in Champaign. Parkhurst was selected from more than 140 nominees.

The Edgar Fellow Program brings together leaders to focus on policy issues free of any partisanship or rivalries, the news release said. The event was being hosted by former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar and the university's Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

“It is truly an honor to be selected among these other leaders in our great state to participate in this program," Parkhurst said, according to the release. "I hope to build a lasting relationship with the other honorees during my time and take what I will learn from this program back to the General Assembly so we can work together and put this state on the right track."

Other area selections for the initiative included Kankakee County Auditor Jacob Lee and county State's Attorney James Rowe.

Parkhurst, who has a law practice in Kankakee, was elected to represent the 79th House District in November.
