Women and girls over age 12 are being invited to learn about self-defense, including techniques like avoidance, taking offensive actions and defensive escapes, in a free workshop hosted by Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) and One Light Self Defense on Sept. 29, according to a press release.
Limited space is available in the class, which will be held in the community room of the Kankakee Valley Rec Center at 6 p.m.
In the press release, Parkhurst said that being unprepared in an attack is the only thing scarier than becoming a victim of a violent crime.

“Instructors from One Light will ensure women are prepared by teaching skills used in the event of an attack,” Parkhurst said in the release. “This is a great opportunity for women and girls over 12.”
Although the class is free, donations will be accepted to help One Light continue its mission of helping victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault.
Registration can be done by emailing Parkhurst@ilhousegop.org or calling 815-523-7779.
