Manteno Community Unit School District 5 Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Committee met November 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

1) Introductions- None

2) Public Library Update

a. Team leaders were asked to update textbooks that are housed at the library.

b. The Friends of the Manteno Public Library Holiday Craft Show will be held on Saturday, December 2nd from 9:30-3:00

c. The library will celebrate President Lincoln’s establishment of Thanksgiving on November 16th at 6:00.

d. The library has tickets for the Holiday Parade of Homes that will be held on December 10th from 10-4.

e. “Sticking Points” a book about how to bring four generations together is now available at Manteno Public Library.

3) Building and Community Updates

a.Each team member gave an update on their teams. Some of the updates included; STEM room preparation, math series pilot, professional development work days, instructional changes based on the Hickory Creek Middle School visit, success on the high school civics assessments, and a Career and Technical Education newsletter.

4) Teachers Change Lives 24/7

a. Copies of the book are available in each building

b. Team leaders discussed how education/teaching is like the Chinese bamboo tree. The changes are happening beneath the surface and sometimes take a while to see.

5) Illinois Report Card

a. The Illinois school report card website was highlighted.

b. The At-A-Glance page will show data on topics such as the graduation rate and teacher retention.

c. PARCC and other assessment scores can be viewed on this site.

6) Strategies to Achieve Instructional Improvement

a. The team discussed what we can do to promote instructional improvement.

b. Some suggestions for improvement included; schedule adjustments, instructional coaches, rigorous curriculum, observations in other classroom s and schools.

7) Professional Development Work Days

a. The purpose of these days was reiterated. The days are considered professional development days which should include work on curriculum and instruction.

b. IEP paperwork is not an example of professional development work. However, looking at IEP goals and designing instruction would be an example of professional development time.

8) December 22nd Institute Day

a. The interest in presenting for the carousel sessions has been exceptional.

b. Feedback on structure of day was given. The carousel/professional development time will occur in the morning with individual work time occurring in the afternoon.

c. Team leaders are discussed options for professional development time.
