Kankakee School District 111 students suspended 3,536 times in a single school year

Kankakee School District 111 reported 3,536 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred 12 students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 3,536 students during the year. That equates to 68 percent of the 5,199 students enrolled.

Of the 3,093 in-school suspensions, 1,812 were given to boys and 1,281 were given to girls, including 539 elementary or middle schoolers and 2,554 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 2,891 incidents. There were 186 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 3,059 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 443 out-of-school suspensions, 279 were given to boys and 164 were given to girls, including 235 elementary or middle schoolers and 208 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 225 incidents. There were 166 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 245 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
