CITY OF KANKAKEE: “Champion of Equality for All”

Event

City of Kankakee issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.

Frances Albrier was a 20th century activist, politician, and labor organizer who led several important campaigns for equality in Northern California. After attending Tuskegee Institute, founded by Booker T. Washington, Albrier went on to graduate from Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she studied nursing and social work. She spent her life after college as an activist for social issues that impacted the African-American community. While Albrier’s nursing career was put on hold due to discrimination, she did not stop from pursuing her dream. During World War II Albrier became the first black woman to serve as a nurse for the Red Cross Motor Corps (in uniform pictured).

Albrier was an activist in social justice causes until her death on August 21, 1987. She had many platforms throughout her years of activism, one program that Albrier, and several community activists, started was the “Don’t buy where you can’t work” campaign. Along with her personal activism, Albrier was elected to serve as a Democratic Central Committeewoman and fought for racial equality and opportunity via organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Congress for Racial Equality.
