Illinois state Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) recently hosted a group of about 70 students from across his 53rd District to share their visions for the state's future.

“I believe the best way to help develop engaged citizens and grow the next generation of leaders is to engage them at a young age,” Barickman posted on his Facebook page soon after hosting his sixth annual Youth Advisory Council program. “This program gives them a chance to not only learn more about their government but to be an active participant in it.”

Barickman spent the early part of the day detailing for students how state government works. Later, they broke off into smaller groups to fine-tune their ideas and develop them as bills.

Among the issues considered were redistricting reform, environmental education and mental health education in high schools.

“It always amazes me to hear the students discuss issues that they are passionate about,” Barickman said in his post. “These young men and women are engaged and passionate about major issues. I hope the students leave here with a new appreciation for government service and an understanding of what is involved with taking your idea, building a consensus, and advancing it into law.”

Barickman is scheduled to meet with the students again in Springfield during the regular legislative session, where they will also tour the Capitol Building, meet with lawmakers, lobbyists, staff members and reporters, and conduct a mock committee hearing on the legislation they picked.

Now in his seventh year in Springfield, Barickman serves on the House’s Education Committee, the Labor Committee and the Criminal Law Committee. His 53rd District includes Ford, Iroquois, Livingston, McLean, Vermilion and Woodford counties.
