Kankakee School District 111 Board of Education met Feb. 10.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Kankakee School District No. 111, Kankakee County Illinois; was held at 6:03 p.m. in the Multi-purpose room at Avis Huff Student Support Services Center, 369 North Fifth Avenue, Kankakee, Illinois.

ROLL CALL

Members present: Mary Archie

Christopher Bohlen

Jess Gathing, Jr. Vice President

Deb Johnston

Angela Shea, Secretary

Barbara Wells, President

Darrell Williams

Members Absent: All Present

A quorum was declared present.

Closed Session

At 6:05 p.m., a motion was made by Shea, seconded by Johnston to adjourn to closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity. ROLL CALL VOTE-Ayes: Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried.

The closed session was adjourned at 7:02 p.m.

At 7:02 p.m, the regular session was reconvened.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barbara Wells, Board President.

Meeting with the Board were:

Dr. Kathleen O’Connor, Assistant Superintendent Robert Grossi, Assistant Superintendent

Dr. Genevra Walters, Superintendent

Rachel Thornton, Recording Secretary

Chris Breech, a reporter from the Daily Journal was present.

Superintendent’s Report

❖ Good News:

❖ Safe School Award: Mr. Cassagrande presented the Safe School Award to Mark Twain.

❖ Be Aware STOP Violence Grant: Ms. Rayburn and Mr. Clark explained the grant and what it will be used for.

❖ Audit Presentation: Carmen Huzinga explained the highlights of the 2019 Financial Statement Audit.

The audit was submitted on time. The district is currently waiting on final approval from the Federal Audit Clearinghouse. Once the Federal Audit Clearinghouse approves the audit they will send the audit to the State and we can finalize the 2019 Audit.

❖ Community-Based Youth Organizations: Junior Kays:

➢ A discussion was held regarding the Junior Kays and other Community Organizations.

Principal’s Report

Mr. Baker discussed the Avis Huff Culture and Climate Improvements. Mr. Baker talked about how the school is helping at-risk students. Teachers will receive trauma-informed care for students on how we can better meet students’ needs. He discussed how they provide individualized Student Support and Interventions. Kendra Wright and Samaje Smith, current students, read letters they wrote about how Avis Huff saved and helped them. Mr. Baker introduced staff members.

Voiced her concerns as to why students will not be able to take French next year. Ms. Brewer would like French to be taught next year.

Steven Hunter

Thanked Taft for Donuts for Dads, and discussed the letter he received from Board President Wells regarding the public comment he made on January 13, 2020. Discussed his concerns regarding communication with the Junior Kays.

Carolyn Mitchell

Discussed her concerns regarding the Junior Kays.

Consent Agenda

A motion was made by Gathing, seconded by Archie to approve the above-listed consent agenda items as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE- AYES: Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried

Action Items

1. Approval of Resolution for Honorable Dismissal of Technology Employees Due to Restructuring.

A motion was made by Gathing, seconded by Johnston to approve the resolution for honorable dismissal of technology employees due to restructuring as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE- AYES: Bohlen, Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, Archie and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried

2. Approval of 2020-2021 School Calendar.

A motion was made by Bohlen, seconded by Archie to table the 2020-2021 school calendar until the next Board Meeting. ROLL CALL VOTE- AYES: Gathing, Johnston, Shea, Williams, Archie, Bohlen and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried

3. Approval of Le Penseur Youth & Family Services INC to use space at King Middle School. Mr. Williams asked exactly what Le Penseur Youth & Family Services would be doing?

The Director, Mr. Summarize, explained to the board what services they will provide to the community.

A motion was made by Gathing, seconded by Shea, to approve the Le Penseur Youth & Family Services INC to use space at King Middle School as presented. ROLL CALL VOTE- AYES: Johnston, Shea, Williams, Archie, Bohlen, Gathing, and Wells. Nays: none. Motion carried
