Data from the class that graduated in 2017 shows 57 percent of Kankakee students enrolled in two- or four-year programs at college or university within 12 months of graduating high school, compared to 70 percent across the state. After 16 months, the rate was 60 percent.
Of the Kankakee graduates attending Illinois community colleges, 17 percent took remedial courses in reading, while 46 percent took them in math and 30 percent took them in communications.
Statewide, 44 percent of students enrolled in community colleges across the state had to take remedial classes.
