An Illinois state representative helped to secure funding for a YMCA to improve handicapped access.
Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) supported legislation in June that would provide funding from the general revenue account to improve access for individuals with a disability to enter a facility.
“I supported this bill because state money is used for local projects," Parkhurst said in a statement in late-June.
As a result of the legislation, the Kankakee YMCA has received nearly $44,000 to install access ramps, create parking spaces and handicapped-accessible restrooms, Parkhurst said.
"The YMCA asked me several years ago for assistance in securing funds to make their facility handicapped accessible," Parkhurst said in the statement. "It took a while, but I am happy to announce I did secure funding through this bill and the YMCA will be accessible to all. I spent a lot of time at the YMCA growing up and am glad to ensure the facility remains open and accessible to our entire community."
