Illinois voters will be asked whether or not to remove the flat-tax protection in the state constitution during the November election, according to the Illinois Policy Institute (IPI).
Gov. J.B. Pritzker has long been pushing for what he calls a "fair tax" that would give residents with incomes of $250,000 or more a higher tax burden than those with lower income levels.
“It is not fair that I pay the same tax rate as a teacher, a child-care worker, a police officer or a nurse,” Pritzker has told IPI.
However, critics of the fair tax argue that the middle class will continue to be the hardest hit, as seen in other states with similar systems.
In Illinois, 60% of the population makes less than $100,000 a year and is classified as the middle class. If the fair tax were to pass the ballot, this would add anywhere from $286 to $1,056 in taxes for those in the middle class, Illinois Policy reports.
When looking at families as a whole, it could add up to $3,500 more in taxes paid each year.
